2020 Tamal Institute: Gran Tamalada

Enjoy the fun and magic of a unique play: Las Nuevas Tamaleras; Learn how to make tamales with step-by-step video tutorials and recipes by the Comadres, Dr. Ellen Riojas Clark and Chef Cariño Cortez and be sure to purchase your tamalada kit from Mi Tierra or Mi Familia, complete with hojas, meat filling and masa ready to spread.

For the kids, there will be children’s activities provided by the San Antonio Public Library such as storybook readings and craft kits available for pick up *.

Join the program, starting at noon on December 5, 2020.

* The San Antonio Public Library invites you to visit Central Library from December 2-5 to pick up your very own free Gran Tamalada craft kit! Kits include child-sized aprons and supplies to create two (2) crafts that celebrate the tamal tradition. Be sure to join us live at La Gran Tamalada virtual event for children’s Storytime and craft en comunidad.

Initiated by The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, the Tamal Institute is a community effort to expand the knowledge on the history and cultural significance of tamales and tamaladas in San Antonio, and to deepen understanding of the collective elements of tamaladas and the significance of the dates where this Mesoamerican dish is served.
